Secret Places at Sigglekow Preserve is a unique neighborhood in the City of Madison that strives to offer a high level of connectivity and create an overall sense of place.

Connectivity: Connectivity is an important trait to the sustainability of a community. To enhance overall connectivity, the design incorporated the development of a safe, efficient, and environmentally compatible multi-modal transportation system. The system provides convenient choices for accessing destinations within and around the neighborhood through the development of an extensive trails system that covers the entire neighborhood.

Sense of Place: Sense of place can be defined by what makes “somewhere” special and different or what makes it routine and relaxing. Specific qualities of landscape infuse a site with a sense of place for people. This design strives to create that sense of place through a framework of local connections, the natural environment and community attributes, all of which work to improve the vitality of the public realm and the connection of people to it. Some of the landscape qualities and amenities designed into this site include a manmade stream, almost two-miles of walking areas and theme plantings that will incorporate the ecological diversity of the native landscape to support the creation of context between what is indigenous and what is new.

Vierbicher provided a broad range of landscape architecture, planning, engineering, surveying, wetland delineation, and graphics design services. Currently, the project has three of ten phases completed.
