The project created a 12,580 square foot “gateway building” on the Wisconsin-Illinois border for State Patrol’s Motor Carrier and Inspection Services. The prototype facility allows the State of Wisconsin conduct indoor inspections, addressing truckers’ weight and safety issues and improving employee safety. One key feature of the scale is the observation turret, which affords 270 degrees of clear vision to monitor truck traffic to and through the facility. Scale controls are centralized at this location for staff efficiency. A 24 hour drivers’ room is available with restroom facilities and weather TV. A meeting room, offices, and locker room support the State Patrol’s Highway operations for activities such as field reports and accident reconstruction. Employees conduct indoor inspections from special access trenches beneath the two drive-through bays, allowing staff to complete a more thorough examination of the vehicles from a safe area. The facility also accommodates a 200’ communication tower along with equipment space for wireless cellular telephone carriers and the State Patrol. Vierbicher provided well design and landscaping services for this project. Awarded Excellence in Masonry by the Wisconsin Concrete Masonry Association (WCMA) in 2004.
