The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) was planning to reconstruct STH 23 (Main Street) through the City of Darlington (City). With this planned improvement, the City saw an opportunity to enhance the aesthetics of their downtown by incorporating streetscaping features. Vierbicher assisted with the project by providing funding expertise with the City’s Tax Increment Districts and detailed design of the streetscaping features.
The design process for the streetscape features included numerous public information and focus group meetings to identify important issues with the residents and downtown businesses. Vierbicher lead a design charrette to gather information critical to develop a unified design theme through the downtown district. Topics included curb bump outs, street furniture, decorative lighting, planters, street trees, and wayfinding signage. The selection of street furniture, trees, and planting areas were designed using input from the public and business engagement process. Detailed grading plans were developed to eliminate or reduce the number of steps required to enter the storefronts. The final design plans and details for the streetscape areas were developed and included as part of the WisDOT let construction project.
Vierbicher was pleased to partner with KL Engineering to complete this project for the City of Darlington.
